Why Solar Panels Are Better Than Ever Before

One of the reasons that solar power systems for residential homes have become so popular in recent years is because of all of the improvements in their design and efficiency. Modern solar power systems are easier to install and will generate more power than ever before. In addition to these improvements, the average system price has dropped in recent years which helps to make them an even more attractive alternative to buying power from your local utility.

At the heart of any solar power system are the solar panels. These solar panels are responsible for converting the sunlight that strikes them into current that can be used in the home. There have been several improvements to these solar panels in recent years that make them more efficient than older models. The solar cells that make up these solar panels are being manufactured in larger quantities which has helped to lower the cost of these solar panels significantly. Also, these solar cells do a much better job of converting less than optimal light into power. Older solar cells required a certain level of sunlight to start producing current and this limited how much power they could generate in a give day. Usually early morning and late afternoon sun would not be bright enough to enable these solar cells to generate power. Many of the older solar panels had problems with cloudy or overcast days and were inactive as a result. These newer solar cells require much less sunlight to start generating power and can also convert more of the actual sunlight that strikes them into useful current. This means that they can generate a larger portion of a home’s electrical needs with the same amount of sunlight as older systems.

Another improvement to these solar panels is their tolerance of sunlight striking them at a more severe angle. Older systems required a very precise alignment with the sun to generate electricity. If a home was too far out of alignment a homeowner was not able to take advantage of a solar power system. With these newer solar panels being able to generate power with a wider angle of sunlight, many of these homes can now enjoy free power from the sun with these new solar panels.

Once the solar panels are installed, the DC current they produce needs to be converted to AC current for use in the home. A device called an inverter is used for this and is also responsible for connecting the system to the home’s electrical system. These inverters are more efficient than older models and also allow for easy expansion of a typical system. This means that a homeowner can start with a smaller solar power system and add new solar panels to their system each year to increase their savings. This type of flexibility was not available in older systems as these inverters had to be sized very specifically for a given number of panels.

All of these improvements help to make a modern solar power system a great alternative for most home’s electrical needs. They are easier to install and because they are also more durable they will continue to generate free power for many years to come.
